Products

As the largest producer of panel products in the UK we have a responsibility to be at the forefront of initiatives that tackle today's environmental challenge.

That's why, as the environmental impact of deforestation became clear, we led the UK industry towards FSC certification. What's more, our European operations were amongst the first in the world to produce FSC-certified panel boards.

All of our products carry the FSC certificate and are manufactured in the UK to the environmental credential of IS01 4001.

Caberwood MDF

Caberwood MDF

The UK’s original and best Medium Density Fibreboard, Caberwood MDF is widely used throughout the construction and furniture industries. It’s manufactured largely from sawmill residues that would otherwise be burnt or rot in landfill, thereby releasing carbon. Norbord Caberwood MDF, like all Norbord European wood panel products, carries the FSC logo and is manufactured under ISO 14001.

Norbord has the distinction of owning the world’s first site to manufacture MDF and, in 1979, our Cowie facility was the first to produce MDF in the UK. Today we continue to be a leader in MDF production and development, improving our manufacturing process by investing in new plant, energy recycling methods and high-technology resins. That means when you specify Caberwood MDF, you know you’re buying better.

Caberwood Chipboard

Caberboard Chipboard or Particleboard

Well-known and respected throughout the UK construction industry, Norbord Caberboard is an environmentally sound product range certified by the FSC. Up to 75% of the range is manufactured from recycled post-business or consumer waste wood products. This keeps the carbon locked, reduces landfill waste and adds value to material that would otherwise be burnt or left to rot.

The Caberboard particleboard range is manufactured at our mills in Cowie in Scotland and South Molton in Devon. The range consists of some of the UK’s best-known brands in both flooring and furniture grade panels.

Sterling OSB

Sterling OSB

A tough, economical alternative to plywood, Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is one of the most environmentally beneficial building materials available. Norbord is the second-largest producer of OSB in the world, so it’s reassuring to know that all of our SterlingOSB comes from sustainable, fast-growing timber; forest thinnings of new-growth pine and spruce from FSC-certified forests. That means there’s no impact on threatened rainforests, unlike with some plywood.

Our SterlingOSB is produced at our Inverness, Scotland plant. The manufacturing process uses less energy than an equivalent volume of almost any other non-wood building material. In fact, much of the energy used to make OSB comes from wood residues derived during the process, instead of fossil fuels.

Did you know?

The trees Norbord use to produce a pack of standard OSB are responsible for removing 2.5 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. That’s the equivalent of two return flights from London to New York (10).

On average Norbord produces around 10,000m3 of OSB each day at its mills worldwide, keeping locked nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. That’s roughly equivalent to the emissions from the electricity used annually to power the homes of everyone who works for Norbord (11).
